Salty ocean... fresh rivers

Have you enjoyed the water cycle? I hope so

Now... I have another question for you....... In the water cycle.... it is very important to collect water in seas, oceans, lakes or rivers...

Have you ever wondered why seas and oceans are salty? Have you ever wondered why rivers have fresh water (not salty)?

I recommend you to watch this video:

Time to experiment!!

As we are scientists, we need to check  that what we are watching is true or not.

Materials:

- salt
- a bowl
- plastic wrap
- warm water
- teaspoon

Procedure:

1 Dissolve salt in the bowl of warm water until you get a solution. (Solution is salty water. You do not see the salt in the water but the salt is in the water)

2 Taste the solution to confirm that you have salty water  (to confirm that water is salty enough ).

3 Cover the bowl with the plastic warp and set it aside in a warm place.

4 After a while you should see tiny drops of water on the plastic cover

5 Remove the plastic carefully and taste the water on the plastic

Do not forget to follow the scientific method!!!!!

Once you finish with the previous experiment I would like you to do the next one:

Set the SAME bowl aside without the cover for a few days until all the water has evaporated.

The separation of a dissolved substances from a liquid by means of evaporation is known as crystallisation

What happened in the second experiment?

Send me your scientific methods and pictures and... videos explaining the process ( not compulsory) to santamartabilingual@gmail.com

Good luck!!!

Deadline: 1st June
